Beyond the Kindertransport

Frederick Koppl '52 was a child when Hitler came to power, but old enough to grasp what it meant to be Jewish in his birthplace of Danzig, an independent city-state that rejoined Poland after World War II. Out of desperation, Koppl's grandparents put him on a train in March 1939 to live with strangers in a faraway land. The rescue mission, called the Kindertransport, eventually saved the lives of 10,000 children from Germany, Austria and the former Czechoslovakia. Koppl later returned to the region as a U.S. soldier to fight the Nazis. Then he found a new home and a new life at Thunderbird. Read more...

T-bird named CEO of Turkish heating company

Thunderbird alumnus Ender Çolak '98 has been appointed as CEO of Baymak Solar Energy Systems, a leading heating and climate company of Turkey and a subsidiary of Dutch-based BDR Thermea. "I am 100 percent part of the global community," Çolak said. "After graduation, I have experienced all levels of international business to become truly global." Read more...

Nike veteran named LaCrosse Footwear president
LaCrosse Footwear, the Portland, Oregon-based company sold last year to a Japanese shoe retailer, has appointed Nike veteran and Thunderbird alumnus Robert Sasaki '98 as its president, the company announced May 17, 2013. Read more in The Oregonian...
