Thunderbird Global Reunion: Macau, November 2009
Re-Shaping the Global Agenda: Leadership for Sustainable Prosperity: Every two years, at varying locations around the globe, T-birds gather with their friends and classmates to celebrate their past, present and future. This year the Thunderbird Global Reunion will take place Nov. 5-7 at the beautiful StarWorld hotel in Macau.
"Re-shaping the Global Agenda: Leadership for Sustainable Prosperity" is the theme of this year's reunion. And while the event offers an array of thought-provoking presentations on this timely topic, it also promises a profusion of fun in typical T-bird style.
The event opens on Thursday, Nov. 5 with a cocktail reception to connect old friends and make your plans for exploring what Macau has to offer. During the conference, learn from globally minded leaders who productively operate across cultural and national divides, who appreciate the differences and nuances around the world and turn them into opportunities. These leaders build bridges across borders and, as a consequence, make our world more prosperous and peaceful.
Click here to register for the event. Book your hotel stay before Sept. 5 for a free room upgrade and additional 15 percent room discount. We hope to see you there!

Major gift helps save Thunderbird Tower: Crews will start work in January to restore Thunderbird Tower to its former glory, thanks to a student-led grassroots campaign and a major gift from Thunderbird Trustee Merle A. Hinrichs '65 and his wife, Miriam.
"The tower represents a significant icon of Thunderbird's history," said Merle Hinrichs, chairman of Global Sources, a Hong Kong-based business-to-business media company. "The tower and the Thunderbird airfield were constructed to serve critical training needs for U.S. and allied pilots during World War II. Lt. Gen. Barton Kyle Yount, commanding general of the U.S. Army Air Training Command, was successful in his request to the U.S. government to donate the Thunderbird airfields property and buildings to establish a school for foreign trade. He firmly believed in 'borders frequented by trade seldom need soldiers.' Those of us who have had the pleasure and privilege of attending Thunderbird fully appreciate the importance of Lt. Gen. Yount's vision. We live it daily. The Tower is Thunderbird's symbol to the cause of peace and prosperity. For this reason I believe it is important not only to refurbish the Tower, but to maintain the essence of its history. The engagement by students, faculty, staff and alumni in this project is encouraging and exciting."
A $2 million pledge, which Miriam made this summer in honor of her husband for his 70th birthday in November 2011, gave the restoration project the boost it needed to turn the dreams of many into reality. The pledge follows an initial $100,000 donation that Merle gave in February 2008 to help launch the project aptly named "Save the Tower."
Since then, hundreds of Thunderbird students, faculty, staff and alumni have stepped forward with additional donations totaling more than $110,000. As part of the Hinrichs' gift, Thunderbird has hired Will Counts '09 - one of three students who helped launch the campaign - to oversee the project and help raise the remaining $500,000 needed to implement all phases of the project.
Counts said the idea behind the grassroots campaign is to involve as many people as possible in giving the condemned building a second life. "We want everybody to be a part of this building," he said.
Once restored, the building will include a student union, the Thunderbird Pub, ThunderShop and an alumni/veterans gallery.
To donate or find more information about this project, visit www.thunderbird.edu/tower. Renovation updates also are available on a blog set up by Counts at http://thunderbirdtower.blogspot.com.
