HELP@work - Healthy Eating and Living Program
A group of about 15 Thunderbird employees has come together for weekly lunch meetings in order to build on the momentum achieved during last spring’s Weight Watchers @ Work program. Lacking the required 18 paid memberships in order to continue with WW@W, Paula Friesen, academic advisor in the Admissions office, proposed a voluntary lunchtime meeting schedule for this summer – and maybe beyond – for former WW@W members and any other interested Thunderbird community members.
Renamed HELP@work, the group meets every Wednesday from noon to 1 p.m. in the Joan and David Lincoln Wing of the Herberger Building Academic Services Conference Room 140 for a healthy bag lunch. A $5 donation from each participant was used to purchase an official Weight Watchers scale for voluntary weigh-ins to help track success in pounds lost each week. Barb Rupp, from Human Resources, created a Personal Progress Tracker for each person who attends. Remaining funds from the $5 donation were used to purchase low calorie/low point healthy snack options.
Lunch meetings will include sharing recipes, product labels, success strategies, articles, good web sites, and discussion. This is the place to enjoy support and encouragement along with some accountability. Weekly weigh in is optional, and only pounds lost will be tallied. Each time the group loses the equivalent of one small person, a celebration will take place.
Contact Paula Friesen if you would like to join HELP@work.

Give while you shop
Thunderbird alumni can now give to their alma mater while they shop. And they won’t need to spend any extra money.
All they will need to do is go online and register their grocery club cards, debit cards and credit cards at www.eScrip.com. Registration is free and takes only a few minutes.
After that, a percentage of every purchase made at participating merchants will go directly to Thunderbird to support alumni programs and services. The Thunderbird Alumni Network Board voted in March to join the eScrip program, which links hundreds of U.S. merchants with alumni who want to help their schools.
Participating merchants include Macy’s, American Airlines, Pep Boys auto supplies, Eddie Bauer clothing and many others.
“EScrip is a fantastic opportunity for alumni to give back to Thunderbird – specifically programs that will directly benefit the alumni – with absolutely no out-of-pocket cost to the alumni,” says network board member Lisa Jones ’91. “You merely register online and then you shop at the stores where you normally shop.”
For more information, contact Alumni Relations or call 602-978-7358. To register, visit the eScrip Web site and click the link that says “sign up – it’s free.” Designate Thunderbird to receive the merchant contributions using group ID No. 500018258.
