FACULTY PROFILE
Caren Siehl, Ph.D.
Clinical Professor of Management
Caren Siehl’s personal interests are as global as her professional international business career, which spans 25 years and 50 countries.
When she’s not assisting multinational corporations with leadership development issues, Siehl enjoys supporting wildlife organizations in Africa. She’s traveled to Uganda and Rwanda with the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund International, an organization dedicated to the conservation of gorillas and their habitats in Africa. She also supports the World Wildlife Fund.
No matter the international experience – in a boardroom or a densely covered jungle – Siehl feels it is important to bring the world into Thunderbird’s classroom. As one of her students, you’ll learn about the challenges facing European, Latin American, Asian and American companies conducting business all over the world, many with whom Siehl has had personal interaction as a consultant.
In the Leading Change and Transformation course that she team-teaches with Dr. David Bowen, you will interface with local non-profit organizations, helping them to lead change effectively. “This real-world project gives our MBA students the opportunity to develop and enrich their skills while providing value-added experience to the organizations,” says Siehl, indicating that final student presentations include comments and feedback from a representative in the partner organization.
Siehl got her start in business as a marketing representative and systems engineer for IBM. Since then, her client roster has grown to include a wide variety of global companies seeking her expertise on matters related to leadership, organizational change and culture. Among them are Eli Lilly and Co., Motorola, IBM, Mattel, General Electric and Le Grand.
According to Siehl, corporate recruiters acknowledge the importance of her classes – Global Leadership and Competing Through People – as key reasons for hiring Thunderbirds. “Companies appreciate the cross-cultural leadership skills of Thunderbird MBAs. Their businesses are increasingly global, and our graduates have the management and leadership skills to be effective in this changing world.”
Previously a professor at INSEAD in France and the University of Southern California, Siehl has been recognized for outstanding teaching at each institution. Published in the most prestigious management journals, her research focuses on leadership challenges, cultural change and executive development.
