Sukumawiki, Shawarma Wraps, Bûches de Noël & More
Ever tried German apple strudel, Bulgarian stuffed peppers, African Sukumawiki, French Bûches de Noël or Mediterranean Shawarma wraps? At the Dec. 1 Africa, India, Middle East and Europe Night, hosted by the Thunderbird Student Government (TSG), more than 400 guests had the opportunity to treat their taste buds to unfamiliar international dishes and libations.
Not only did the Glendale, Ariz., event feature a feast of African, Indian, Middle Eastern and European food, but it also provided a feast for the eyes. Current Thunderbird students, donned in their native attire, modeled traditional costumes during a global fashion show – Moroccan kafthans; Indian saris, lehengas, lungi and mundu; and African iro, buba and gele.
“The Regional Nights really showcase the diversity we have at Thunderbird, ” says Shelley Pursell ’09, an American native who helped organize the event that drew talent from various student culture clubs. “It's amazing to see someone you sit next to in class every day get on stage in front of 400-plus people and perform a native dance from his or her country in native clothing.”
Aside from the event being a time for students to unwind and forget about class work for an evening, it also is a unique cultural learning experience. “I participated because I wanted to give back to the community,” says Bruno Steiger ’07 of Switzerland. His family provided a unique food item found only in Switzerland: Raclette Cheese.
“Regional Nights are all about the people and sharing your culture with others,” says Steiger. “It’s a great place to be introduced to students you haven’t met before, as well.”
The Regional Night featured Makossa and Zouglou African dance styles, a French rap, traditional Bhangra Indian dances, and performances by Global Sounds, Thunderbird’s club that celebrates diversity through the art of song. The School’s ThunderDance Club also performed an Indian drum-dance solo, a Middle Eastern dance, and an Indian Fusion dance.
“The Regional Night was global in the real sense and was a learning experience all by itself,” adds Rahul Pruthi ‘09, a native of India.
