A T-bird Cross-country Road Trip Raises Cancer Awareness

Read Lori's blog at www.kttcroadtrip.comA Thunderbird graduate who lost her mother to breast cancer in 2005 has started a cross-country road trip from San Francisco to New York to raise awareness for Saks Fifth Avenue’s 2008 Key to the Cure campaign.

Lori Raimondo ’89 is collecting stories of cancer survivors along the way and recording them in a blog at www.kttcroadtrip.com. She said people see the cancer slogans on her car and tap on her window or stop her at diners or hotel lobbies to share their stories.

“Everybody’s story is unique,” Raimondo said during an Aug. 28 stop at Thunderbird. “Sometimes I become emotional when I hear these stories, and I just go back to my hotel room and lay there for awhile.”

Besides meeting cancer survivors along the way, Raimondo said her journey has helped her reconnect with a Thunderbird classmate who shares her passion for cancer research. Raimondo met with Saks Fifth Avenue executives in New York four days before the trip, and the senior vice president of marketing looked familiar. That executive, Kimberly Grabel, turned out to be another 1989 Thunderbird graduate who took a school trip to Paris with Raimondo. “I kept looking at her, and she looked so familiar,” Raimondo said. “Then she asked where I went to school.”

This road trip, which will end Sept. 27, is not Raimondo’s first. She drove across the country on a spontaneous trip in a rental car in 2006 to raise $9,490 for cancer research — one dollar for each day her mother, Lorraine Raimondo, battled cancer over a 26-year period.

MTB Abuse

In recent weeks, there have been several instances where MTB and the information it offers to the Thunderbird community have been abused. MTB may not be used to send unsolicited or unapproved mass e-mails (spamming). Thunderbird offers several options for T-birds to promote their accomplishments or their businesses (Discussion Boards, Class Notes, Business-to-Business Directory). If you would like further information about these tools, please e-mail alumni@thunderbird.edu.

Support the Thunderbird Sustainable Innovation Summit

Watch the VideoStarted in 2003, the 2008 Thunderbird Sustainable Innovation Summit is in its 6th year and registration is now open to both teams and judges.

Each year students compete in the Thunderbird Sustainable Innovation Summit. Beginning with the Online Round student teams compete from anywhere in the world and submit a 2-page sustainable innovation solution to the challenge questions that sponsoring companies pose. Out of all the teams that compete, ten teams are invited to compete in the Final Round - held live at the Thunderbird Campus in Glendale, Arizona - for the Championship Crown of Sustainable Innovation and a cash prize of $20,000.

Last year this global event attracted 118 teams from 59 universities, in 15 countries and was won by a team from Johns Hopkins University, School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS), with Thunderbird placing 2nd and 3rd.

This year, Thunderbird is hoping to take first place, and we need your help!

There are still some sponsorship opportunities available starting at $1,000, and we are also still in need of a few more judges. So please show your Thunder Spirit and support us in whatever way you can.
