The Challenge Process

Welcome to the Thunderbird Challenge

Be prepared for your participation as a Judge in the next Challenge. Below are the key dates and tasks to keep you on track.

1. Sign up as a Judge: Aug. 20 - Oct. 5, 2008 - Noon Arizona Time*



  • Register online and submit your bio/resume for approval.
  • Choose the judging phase you prefer based on your availability.
  • Refer a colleague to be a Judge.
  • All information regarding the Challenge Question will be available to Judges online via their personal accounts Oct. 6, 2008
  • Up to 10 two-page Innovation Plans will be assigned to each Judge at Noon, Oct. 14, 2008 Arizona time*.
  • Plans and scores are due back before Noon, Oct. 21, 2008 Arizona time*.

2. The Challenge Online Round: Oct. 6 - 12, 2008



  • Beginning at Noon Arizona time* on Oct. 6, 2008, logon to your account to view the Challenge Question and background information.
  • Teams will develop and submit a two-page innovation plan online by Oct. 12, 2008 at Noon Arizona time*.

3. The Challenge Online Judging Round: Oct. 14 - 21, 2008 - Noon, Arizona Time*



  • Oct. 14, 2008 at noon, Arizona time*: Receive up to 10 two-page Innovation Plans in your online account for scoring.
  • Oct. 21, 2008 at noon, Arizona time*: Judge must complete the judging process and upload his or her scores for each team plan.
  • Oct. 22, 2008 at noon, Arizona time*: Results will be released to registered teams, and the Top 10 Teams announced and invited to attend the Final Round at Thunderbird.

Estimated Time - Minimum 30 minutes per plan @ 10 plans = five hours per phase

4. The Challenge Half-time: Oct. 22, 2008 - Noon, Arizona Time*



  • Top 100 teams announced online, including Top 10 Finalists
  • Final Round questions and related information released to Top 10 Teams


5. Global Champions of Sustainable Innovation Announced – November. 15, 2008

  • The winning Team earns a $20,000 cash prize and is crowned the "Global Champions of Sustainable Innovation 2008."
  • Second-place Team wins a $5,000 cash prize.
  • Third-place Team wins a $3,000 cash prize.
