A Powerful Tool to Develop Students, Assess Business School Outcomes <BR>

“But today, companies increasingly need softer people skills….and perhaps most important, working across cultures with Chinese, Germans, Indians, Italians, Russians, and a world full of suppliers and partners.”

A Powerful Tool to Develop Students, Assess Business School Outcomes
and Satisfy AACSB Requirements

Over the past several years, many business schools in the U.S. and other countries have designed specialized programs in International Management/International Business. Quite a few business schools have developed mission statements, goals, and strategies that articulate their commitment to developing global leaders and managers.

But how can business schools measure their success in achieving their goals? Is there a scientific way to assess whether or not students have developed global leadership/management capabilities?

AACSB has recently developed new criteria for assessing business schools’ success. It is called “Learning Outcome Assessment” or LOA, whereby business schools are required to show, in a scientific way, the extent to which they accomplish their missions, goals, and strategies.

Thunderbird School of Global Management, the world’s No-1 ranked graduate school in international management, has designed an instrument that is rigorous, scientific, innovative, and easy to use. It is Internet-based and has 76 items. It takes only a few minutes to complete.

What it is and How it Works

The questionnaire is designed to measure a student’s profile of global mindset. Global mindset refers to an individual’s ability to work effectively with individuals, groups, and organizations from other parts of the world.

Based on interviews with more than 200 global executives in cities all over the world, and a survey of more than 1,000 individuals in many countries, a team of eight Thunderbird professors have scientifically defined global mindset and its three major dimensions: Intellectual Capital, Psychological Capital, and Social Capital.

The instrument, which has very strong psychometric properties, was designed in collaboration with the Dunnette Group, world class experts in instrument design. A psychometric report on the validity and reliability of the instrument is available on request.

Hundreds of managers in large multinational corporations participated in the design of the inventory. The current TGMI database has more than 6,500 individuals who have completed the survey. Well over 200 organizations are represented in our database, including managers from Amway, Eli Lilly, Henkel, LG, Intel China, The World Bank, and the Fulbright Foundation.

Over 2,000 MBA students at Thunderbird, Georgetown, University of Victoria, Zayed University (Middle East) and other schools have already completed the TGMI.

How Can Business Schools Use TGMI?

The ideal format for using the instrument is a pre and post test format. All incoming students can be invited to complete the instrument around two weeks prior to the start of the program. All graduating students can be invited to complete the survey around six weeks prior to graduation. Thunderbird provides detailed reports on the pre and post test results.

But It’s Not Only About Assessment - It’s Also About Student Development

While the survey is of clear benefit for the schools, it can also be a valuable developmental experience for the students, both in pre and post test versions. Students who complete the pretest, will receive their individual confidential feedback reports during an especially designed debrief workshop. The workshop takes anywhere from two to three hours and will help students understand their own profile of global mindset, their strengths and their areas of developmental opportunity. They learn the steps they can take on their own to proactively improve their own global mindset while studying for their degrees. Students who complete the post test, will receive their confidential individual feedback reports showing a comparison of their pre and post test scores. They will learn how to use these results to better plan their careers and how to be more effective global leaders. A sample comparative profile for a graduating MBA student is shown below.
