Ernesto Poza is a clinical professor of entrepreneurship at the Thunderbird School of Global Management. He is an internationally recognized leader in family business, education, research and consulting, and is the director of Thunderbird’s renowned Global Family Enterprise, a unique program within the Walker Center for Global Entrepreneurship at Thunderbird.
Mr. Poza’s areas of expertise include family business, strategic management, succession planning, business growth, governance, and global entrepreneurship. He has advised executive management of both Fortune 500 companies and privately held businesses in countries including Chile, Perú, Ecuador. Colombia, Venezuela, the Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, Mexico, Guatemala, Honduras, Spain and the United States.
He is a prolific and sought-after writer, whose works include the critically acclaimed and oft-cited Family Business, a textbook that provides the next generation of family business owners with the knowledge and skills needed for the successful management and leadership of the family enterprise. Additionally, he has authored or co-authored expert testimonies and business advice for such prestigious publications as Family Business Review, International Journal of Management Cases, Sloan Management Review and Organizational Dynamics.
Mr. Poza is a founding member of the Family Firm Institute in 1986, a not-for-profit organization that is generally recognized as the premier body for advising and research in the family business and family wealth fields. In 1996, he earned the institute’s prestigious Richard Beckhard Practice Award, presented in recognition of outstanding contributions to the field of family business practice.
His work has been featured on CNN, NBC, and NPR, as well as in The New York Times, Fortune Small Business, Business Week, Family Business Magazine, Industry Week and Nation’s Business. He is on the editorial board of Family Business Review, is a contributing editor of Family Business Magazine and a regular contributor to Business Week´s SmallBiz, Family Inc. column. Fluent in Spanish, he has served as a board member and consultant to large family-owned and family-controlled firms in the United States, Latin America and Europe.
Prior to joining the faculty at Thunderbird, Mr. Poza was a professor for the Practice of Management at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland (Ohio) and the director of the university’s highly-ranked Partnership with Family Business at the Weatherhead School of Management.
Mr. Poza received his M.S. in Management from the Alfred P. Sloan School of Management at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in 1974 and his B.S. in Organization and Management from Yale University in 1972. He completed postgraduate coursework in the Organizational Behavior doctoral program at Case-Western (1975-76) and the Gestalt Institute of Cleveland (1978-79).
