Aureliano Garcia, Class of 2012, Santa Fe
"The world is getting smaller by the minute. We have no time for a closed mindset or a blurred vision about what is happening around us. T-birds around the globe are creating strong ties, productive networks, and most importantly, they are creating a difference in the world. Mindfulness is the name of the game, and being a student of the Global MBA program is all about playing the game right by being a true citizen of the world. This is a life changing experience, but above all, a sure way to become a better human being."

Aureliano Garcia '12

For professionals with extensive experience in sales and marketing, organizing events are on the list of expertise. But how many can say they have had a lunch event ON the Great Wall of China, closed the Opera Theater in Australia, and had dinner in the open jungle of South Africa with the animals? Aureliano Garcia, Global MBA Class of 2012, can.

The word unique doesn’t even begin to describe the experiences Aureliano could tell you (enough to fill up an afternoon with anecdotes and your stomach would hurt from laughing so much), of course being a certified professional speaker may have something to do with it. After graduating with honors (majoring in Business Administration) from the same Tecnológico de Monterrey of the Global MBA for Latin American Managers program, Aureliano worked for GMAC (the financial arm of GM) for 13 years in numerous roles, including the Sales and Marketing Director for Mexico and the Regional Training Director for Mexico and Latin America (across 8 countries). This position suited Aureliano’s love for different cultures, as did the Global MBA for Latin American Managers program. He thought “the perspective of having more than 150 people from different countries in Latin America sharing their experiences and having teachers with amazing backgrounds from the U.S. and from other Latin American countries was a very interesting proposal.”

One of the things that sparked Aureliano’s interest in the “tailor-made” program was “the best professional network of graduates in the world.” Fortunately for Aureliano, this network paid off before he became an alumnus. Recently, he switched both jobs and industries, and is now in charge of a special commercial program for Telefonica Movistar. The reason Aureliano landed this new opportunity? “A classmate recommended me.”

Aureliano got to experience firsthand that “when eventualities come, panic is not an option and keeping a cool head and having a plan B strategy is the T-bird way to do things.” His planned interim was Japan; however, due to the unfortunate events of the 2011 tsunami, he switched into the group going to Geneva. It was there, surrounded by at least 6 different languages and over 7 regional customs, he really felt not like a “visitor but a citizen of the world.” His favorite part about the trip? “Having the opportunity to meet and see actual Tbird alumni in action” (and the Tbird VIP treatment didn’t hurt). Aureliano found these alumni stories motivating, especially because “any Thunderbird graduate is equipped to deliver results and really make a difference in any part of the world.” It was on this trip that Aureliano “finally understood” how a Global MBA truly affects the working professional.

Aureliano’s extracurricular activities include being an avid reader (in English and Spanish), especially of business books. He also enjoys travelling to Las Vegas to see the Cirque du Soleil and to New York to see Broadway plays/musicals. He is an aficionado of Tauromaquia (bullfights), cigars, and fine wines. However, his favorite role to play and the “greatest experience” of his life is “being a dad” to his one-year-old son.
