Hanna Brenalt '09 |
Hanna Brenalt's fascination with the global world began at a young age. "A great deal of this curiosity was sparked and supported by my father, a cartographer, airline pilot and seasoned world traveler," he explains. "He would not only bring home books and stories from around the world, but also would give us the opportunity to travel and see the world with him."
Born in Colombia to Lebanese and Colombian parents, Brenalt is a naturalized U.S. citizen with a deep appreciation for his heritage. He earned his education in both Colombia and the United States and believes that some of his global curiosity might be inherited from the "Phoenician spirit" of his Lebanese grandparents.
Even today, his interest in things global continues to grow. "World events have a huge impact in my line of work," explains Brenalt, a financial advisor at Merrill Lynch in West Palm Beach, Fla. He begins each morning scanning the global headlines and financial news on television, and follows up with a scan of up to four online newspapers.
When he gets to work, Brenalt jumps right into analyzing his clients' financial position and statements, placing orders, updating his clients and calling prospects. Along with providing financial solutions for his clients, the 41-year-old also likes to mentor newcomers to the firm.
Since beginning the joint Thunderbird - Tecnológico de Monterrey program, Brenalt has begun working his way into the coveted Merrill Lynch designation of International Financial Advisor. "The Global MBA for Latin American Managers program has given me the opportunity to aim higher," explains Brenalt. "It has also allowed me to interact with peers and clients and to respond to initiatives with confidence." With the new title, Brenalt will advise Latin America clients in financial management and investments.
In the near future, he looks forward to working in overseas assignments where he can put his years of financial experience and new Thunderbird skills to the test. "Some of these places may be Latin America , the Middle East, or Asia ," explains Brenalt. Longer-term, he envisions himself teaching business courses at the university level.
What he will remember most fondly about the Thunderbird experience, he says, is the learning experiences from classmates. "This is the finest assembly of professionals who bring to class the most diverse views on current events – and the greatest experience in Latin American issues faced day-to-day in their jobs."
