Katherine Hutton is Associate Vice President of Academic Operations and Planning at Thunderbird School of Global Management. She is responsible for the management of operations for academic degree programs at the School including oversight of Executive MBA, Global MBA Online and Global MBA Latin America programs. Additionally she manages logistics and risk for credit-based student programs held outside of the United States and other operations associated for the full-time MBA and MA/MS degree programs at the School. Ms. Hutton earned her MBA from Arizona State University and her BS from the University of Arizona.
Prior to her current position Ms. Hutton was the Director of Special Projects in the Finance and Accounting Department at Thunderbird where she had oversight of faculty and staff travel and monitoring of travel spend for the School. She developed Thunderbird’s Travel Policy and Duty of Care standards for travel. Ms. Hutton was also responsible for research and analysis of topically specific issues for the department. Previously she served as the Managing Director of Thunderbird’s Private Equity Center and as the Managing Director of Walker Center for Global Entrepreneurship where she developed and managed non-academic programs for the Center in addition to serving as Director of the Thunderbird Global Entrepreneurship Incubator and Director of the affiliated Thunderbird Angel Network.
Ms. Hutton’s professional background includes a 20-year career in economic development. Throughout her career she was engaged with corporate clients, and small- and medium-sized enterprises considering new or expanded locations for operations in metropolitan Phoenix and Arizona. Corporate clients hailed from a variety of industries including biotechnology, business services, education, healthcare, hospitality, retail and clean technology. Ms. Hutton’s experience also includes public policy development, location analysis, community planning, strategic planning and public infrastructure development.
Faculty for the Basic Economic Development Course, a professional development course, Ms. Hutton teaches entrepreneurship and small business. She has been a paid peer reviewer for Harvard Business Publishing. She is a Certified Economic Developer as designated by the International Economic Development Council and a graduate of the Council’s Economic Development Institute at the University of Oklahoma. She has been published in the Economic Development Journal and was awarded Economic Developer of the Year for Arizona. Ms. Hutton has presented at national and state level conferences on economic development including the International Economic Development Council, Urban Land Institute, Arizona Association for Economic Development. She has also been a guest lecturer at Arizona State University and the University of Arizona.
Ms. Hutton serves as the citizen member of the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee for Banner Sun Heath Research Institute and the Translational Genomics Institute’s Translational Drug Development Accelerator. She is a past board chair of Scottsdale Training and Rehabilitation Services and KAET Channel 8, the PBS station serving central and northern Arizona.
