Merle & Miriam Hinrichs Veterans Scholarship

On Remembrance Day, 2011, Merle A. Hinrichs ’65 addressed the audience of Thunderbird alumni, students, war veterans, friends and family gathered for the unveiling of the restored Thunderbird Tower.

It was fitting to hold the rededication of the Tower, the iconic heart of the Thunderbird campus, on the auspicious 11.11.11. The Tower started life as an aircraft control tower for Thunderbird Field, used to train international pilots for service in WWII. As the world transitioned to peacetime, General Yount, destined to be Thunderbird’s first president, saw the need for international executive talent to build bridges of commerce across disparate cultures. In 1946, the International Institute of Foreign Trade was founded, with the tower re-outfitted to serve the purpose of promoting education, prosperity and peace.

During his address, Hinrichs’ thanked Ray Woodside who hired him after graduating from Thunderbird. Ray was a fellow T’bird, a Korean War veteran and the founder of an export trade publication, The Importer, in Japan. Both gentlemen embraced and lived the values of Thunderbird. They used their education to advance commerce, international understanding and global prosperity. Both understood that these are key components to world peace.

Hinrichs emphasized that Thunderbird’s endowment is its alumni, and stressed the critical role that ‘giving back’ plays in the school’s continued success.

Just before the restored tower was unveiled – and the flyby of WWII era and other military aircraft delighted all in attendance – Merle announced a $100,000 pledge for the Merle & Miriam Hinrichs Veterans Scholarship. In the spirit of giving, 5 (five) other alumni generously added another $30,000 to the scholarship fund.

The Veterans Scholarship is in recognition of the sacrifices that veterans have made for America, and the opportunity afforded by a Thunderbird education to help build lasting bridges of international peace and prosperity.
