DC Alumni Chapter Internship Scholarship |
Unpaid internships are a strong -and peculiar- feature of the DC job market. Many of these employment opportunities are a great fit for Thunderbird students (i.e. working for microfinance, relief and development organizations etc...). Yet, for students these valuable internship openings come in direct competition with more lucrative internship opportunities in other metropolis (NYC, SF etc...).
To improve the school's presence and standing in these industries through making it easier for outstanding Thunderbird students to accept internships at firms in the said industries in the Washington DC area.
Providing a scholarship/stipend/in-kind help to selected Thunderbird students who accept unpaid or poorly paid internships in the DC area (starting 2012 internship season).
The project will be officially launched at the September DC chapter event (09/24/2011). Donation will be accepted there and on until March 31st, 2012.
To attract individual donations, sponsored donations and corporate donations as well as in-kind donations.
Individual donations: Direct donations from alumni. This may also benefit from company donation matching programs.
Sponsored donations: Through Thundercare type of fund raising events. Ex: I agree to give 4 hours of my time to go help during a Thundercare-type event and commit to finding 5-10 sponsors to reward me with say $10/hr. Personal yield $200-$400 per event. We plan on organizing 3 Thundercare-type of events between September 2011 and March 2012.
Corporate donations: We plan on reaching out to corporations in the Washington DC area to become corporate sponsors of the program.
In-kind donations: Air mileage, 1 month of free or at a discounted rate accommodation, Restaurant tickets, invitations to cultural events etc...
Beyond a simple financial aid program, the resource package that our project intends to offer is designed to create a multi-faceted dynamics that will foster an environment most conducive to attracting talented Thunderbird students to employment opportunities and organizations that we believe are a particularly good fit to the Thunderbird education and graduates profile.
Thank you!
