Global Mindset is defined as a set of attributes and competencies that help current and future global leaders work more effectively with individuals, groups and organizations unlike themselves.
Global Mindset is measured using an assessment tool which NGMI has developed through a rigorous scientific process - the Global Mindset Inventory (GMI).
The GMI is a web-based survey consisting of a scientifically verified framework.
The GMI consists of <100 questions put into a three-capital and nine competencies verified framework.
The three capitals of the GMI are: Intellectual, Psychological and Social Capital.
There are nine competencies that are also measured on the GMI. Each capital, (intellectual, psychological, social), has 3 attributes.
The GMI is only administered and debriefed using GMI Certified Facilitators. There are <100 throughout the globe.
In 2005, eight Thunderbird professors with expertise in global business and cross-cultural management interviewed over 200 global executives to begin development of what would become the GMI.
More than 12,000 people in more than 100 countries have taken the GMI.
The GMI is used primarily by two groups. (1) By corporations all over the world. (2) The GMI is also used by business schools to measure their global Learning Outcomes Assessment (LOA) for accreditation purposes with the AACSB (Assoc. to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business).
There are more than 50 companies which have used the GMI.
Some of our clients are: Accenture; Aditya Birla (India); Cisco Systems; Dell; Dow Chemicals; Ernst&Young; Gnext (Brazil); Henkel (Germany); Statoil (Norway); Legrand (France); TRI (China), among others.
There are more than 25 academic institutions throughout the world that have used the GMI. For example, Athens University (Greece); Rice; Boston College; George Washington; FIA (Brazil); ITESM (Mexico); Purdue; U of Victoria (Canada); Zayed U (UAE).
Yes, the GMI is a valid assessment tool. It has been validated by the Dunnette Group, the “gold standard” for Organizational Psychology assessment validation.
The instrument, which has very strong psychometric properties, was designed in collaboration with the Dunnette Group, world class experts in instrument design.
Based on interviews with over 200 global executives in 23 cities all over the world, and surveys of more than 1,000 individuals, a team of Thunderbird professors have scientifically defined global mindset and its three major dimensions: Intellectual Capital, Psychological Capital, and Social Capital. They further developed metrics and scientific instruments to measure an individual’s and a group’s profile of global mindset.
For a more in depth look into the extensive research undertaken to develop the GMI, please review the GMI Technical Report.

The Global Mindset Inventory was developed at Thunderbird School of Global Management, the world’s #1 ranked graduate school in international management. It takes only a few minutes to complete. The instrument is available in a version specifically designed for corporations, academia, government organizations and nonprofits.
It is designed as a web-based, less than 100 item instrument that only takes an average of 10 minutes to complete.
