As you learn how to speak and write Spanish, you are also introduced to the culture and social customs important to conduct business in Spanish speaking countries. |
This is an introductory course for beginning learners of contemporary standard Spanish. No prior knowledge is required. Students study language fundamentals such as pronunciation, vocabulary and grammar. The emphases are: a) establishing a solid foundation in pronunciation; b) building vocabulary and sentence patterns in communicative contexts; c) acquiring oral/aural comprehension; d) preparing the students to read texts in contemporary Spanish. In addition, cultural and social information that goes along with language use is included.
Lessons address common topics such as greeting and farewell, identifying oneself and family members, talking about hobbies and school life/workplace, telling time and dates, extending invitations and making appointments, shopping and dining out and exchanging information about the weather and transportation.
The student's level of success is assessed through written exams and performance scenarios in which they speak the language.
Outcomes: The students demonstrate speaking abilities at the level of Novice High.
This is a continuation of Module I at a higher level. While developing oral and aural skills remains the focus of instruction, teaching students to read texts in Spanish is also incorporated. Lessons address common topics such as greeting and farewell, identifying oneself and family members, talking about hobbies and school life/workplace, telling time and dates, extending invitations and making appointments, shopping and dining out and exchanging information about the weather and transportation.
Students perform short skits and participate in spontaneous conversations.
The student's level of success is assessed through written exams and performance scenarios in which they speak the language.
Outcomes: The students demonstrate speaking abilities at the level of Intermediate Low.
This course is a continuation of Module 3. Students practice conversation at the intermediate level, with additional emphasis on developing listening and reading skills. Writing is taught to support communicative skills.
The emphases of this course are: a) building more vocabulary and grammatical structures for communication purposes; b) integrating the linguistic and cultural knowledge acquired in Spanish 4015 with the new knowledge; c) introducing business content and terminology in instruction and activities.
Lessons address common topics such as exchanging information related to work, daily life, school, recreation and particular areas of professional interest.
The student's level of success is assessed through written exams and performance scenarios in which they speak the language.
Outcomes: The students demonstrate speaking abilities at the level of Intermediate Mid.
Continuation of Module 3 at a higher level. Students continue to practice speaking, listening and reading for communication purposes. Lessons address common topics such as the ones covered in Module 3. Business topics and related terminology continue to be incorporated in the classroom instruction and activities.
The student's level of success is assessed through written exams and performance scenarios in which they speak the language. Successful completion of this module fulfills the graduation requirement in languages for the degree.
