Your partnership with the Career Management Center (CMC) starts even before orientation week. It begins when you 'virtually' meet your primary CMC career advisor and receive an initial assignment that becomes part of the Career Management Seminar – a required, non-credit course on career search. Once established, your relationship continues throughout the Thunderbird experience. |
The CMC works diligently to prepare you with strategy, tools and techniques to conduct a successful job search. It acts as a facilitator in making employment connections by sponsoring hundreds of company activities and visits annually. We also offer a broad range of programs and services to assist you with career development and job searches. These include
The CMC maintains a state of the art electronic library, via the International Business Information Centre (IBIC), which provides electronic resources to registered users anytime, anywhere. The IBIC provides access to hundreds of international resources and more than 50 databases for conducting business research and employment analysis. It includes:
The CMC hosts an entire week of career-related activities for students and recruiters every October. It includes soft skills and function/industry workshops, employer and alumni panel discussions, guest speakers and much more. View this year's Professional Development Week activities here. Professional Development Week culminates in the Fall Career Fair, where Thunderbird hosts around 50 employers each year.
One-on-one coaching sessions with Career Advisors are designed to help you articulate your skills and strengths, improve your résumé writing, interviewing and salary negotiations skills.
You’re given access to résumé samples for various industries. You will learn to polish your own résumé — working directly with your career advisor and, often, with company representatives who share the do’s and don’ts of effective résumés.
Peer Career Advisors are students who help their fellow T-birds attain the highest level of career success. The CMC assigns a peer advisor to every incoming student to provide expertise on major funtional/industry areas, deliver career-related assistance and coaching, and communicate campus career events and opportunities.
This program provides extra preparation and is considered a "rehearsal" for the real thing. Mock interviews are conducted by CMC staff, other Thunderbird staff and alumni. Critique sessions follow the interview, where you receive immediate feedback on your performance.
The CMC partners with Thunderbird professional clubs to sponsor select groups of students to travel and network with upper-level management within specific industries in certain geographic regions. TREKs can offer you a chance to be exposed to well-respected organizations and give those organizations an opportunity to showcase themselves at very little cost. Participants are selected based on academic merit, extracurricular activities, TREK-related interest and relevant work experience.
Thunderbird’s professional clubs work with the CMC in sponsoring career events and activities that expose you to corporate contacts. Most professional campus clubs have a CMC liaison as a part of their organizational structure.
Students may access job opportunities through Thunderbird's career management portal, GlobalConnect. GlobalConnect allows students to convey their qualifications and interests to prospective employers, store multiple résumés, view job postings that fit your specific qualifications and interests, create job search agents, apply for positions, and schedule interviews online.
Taught by CMC staff and guest lecturers throughout the school year, specialized workshops provide a deeper understanding of such topics such as interviewing, changing careers, industry areas, etiquette and networking.
The Career Management Center partners with third-party résumé book provider MBAFocus to provide convenient résumé access to employers interested in recruiting Thunderbirds. Thunderbird student résumés are seen alongside other graduate business programs by recruiters from top organizations across the nation and world.
